Comparanoia: Are You Stuck in the Comparison Spiral?
May 06, 2026
The Midlife Comparison Trap
What do you call it when comparison stops being motivating and starts making you spiral? I've been calling it Comparanoia.
It's that spiral that kicks in when comparison stops being motivating and starts making you feel like you just don't measure up. Like everyone else has figured something out that you haven't. Like you're somehow behind.
You know the feeling. It's scrolling Instagram and landing on someone your age who looks ten years younger and immediately feeling worse about yourself than you did thirty seconds ago. It's watching a former colleague pivot successfully or launch something new and feeling a complicated mix of happy for them and quietly devastated for yourself. It's feeling completely fine in the moment and then lying awake at 2am running the comparison tape.
That's Comparanoia. And I had a serious case of it recently — and the irony is that it happened in one of the most inspiring rooms I've ever been in.
I was invited to speak at Quest, a storytelling event for women in their third act created by the remarkable Diana Place of Third Act Quest. It's part retreat, part celebration, part storytelling festival — and it's exactly the kind of gathering I love. Women showing up, sharing their most powerful stories, asking the big questions about what comes next.
I was also there as the event photographer. Which meant I had days to witness something really beautiful before my own turn came.
And that's exactly when the Comparanoia showed up.
Not in the room. In the quiet moments. When it was just me and my thoughts and my racing heart.
In this episode I get honest about what that spiral actually felt like, why I think the comparison trap hits differently in midlife than it did when we were younger, and the one word that finally shifted something for me before I went on.
I also talk about why curiosity might be the most powerful antidote to Comparanoia — and share four practical tools for getting out of the spiral the next time it shows up for you.
Because here's what I know: you are not behind. Your path is not finished. And you are not alone in this.
